Starting Monday morning, drivers caught speeding through the school zone on Sanibel Island will receive citations.
Sanibel police installed a speed camera at the Sanibel School a few weeks ago, initially issuing only warnings. However, starting on April 14, drivers exceeding the speed limit by 10 miles per hour will be fined $100.
Sanibel joins a growing list of communities aiming to reduce speeding in school zones. Currently, there are speed cameras at 17 schools in Cape Coral and in Hendry County .
Unincorporated Lee County and Fort Myers are also looking to add speed cameras, and Charlotte County leaders are considering the idea as well.
