Naples beaches are preparing for the upcoming sea turtle nesting season with construction efforts to strengthen the shoreline and protect the turtles.
There are five locations where beach access will be blocked off. Starting Monday, crews will begin fixing damaged seawalls and installing fencing as the area approaches sea turtle nesting season.
Last year, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported a decline in Southwest Florida nesting numbers.
Now, the clock is ticking with nesting season starting in May. This is why fencing is crucial to protect both the nesting turtles, baby hatchlings, and their nests from different threats like predators and even people. Getting too close to nests or shining lights on the beach at night can disorient the turtles.
New seawalls will be constructed at the ends of 3rd Avenue South and 15th Avenue South, where none currently exist. Damaged seawalls will be replaced at North Lake Drive, 14th Avenue South, and 16th Avenue South.
As you make your way to the beach, starting Monday, the accesses will be closed at North Lake Drive, 3rd Avenue South, 14th Avenue South, 15th Avenue South, and 16th Avenue South.
Temporary chain-link fencing with silt screening will be in place until construction work wraps up. Some parking will still be available, but there will be no beach access at these locations.
