Florida’s Attorney General James Uthmeier is coming after Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer for adhering to “sanctuary city” policies, now outlawed in the state.
A letter sent by the attorney general on Monday touches on some very serious legal action, including potentially removing the long-term mayor from office.
Uthmeier, in the letter, refers to comments Dyer made in a council meeting last week – saying Orlando Police Department officers wouldn’t be proactive in immigration enforcement, rather adhering to the city’s “Trust Act” policy.
The attorney general said the city’s policy is now void under state law and has been since Gov. Ron DeSantis outlawed sanctuary city policies six years ago.
WESH 2 reached out to a number of city leaders, including the mayor, about the letter.
District 4 Commissioner Patty Sheehan sent WESH 2's Tony Atkins a text message.
“I saw the letter and I’m distressed by it. Immigrants should be given due process,” Sheehan said.
WESH 2 is still working to hear from city leaders in response to the attorney general’s letter.
