A 17-year-old student was arrested Tuesday morning after school staff said they discovered a BB gun in his backpack at a Hendry County high school.
According to the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office, the student triggered the school’s weapons detection system while entering LaBelle High School.
A school resource officer immediately searched the student’s backpack, where a BB gun and a metal container of BBs were found.
Sheriff Steve Whidden said there was no direct threat or immediate danger to students or staff during the incident.
“We intend to continue to strive to ensure a safe school environment for our students,” Whidden said.
The student was taken into custody on a charge of possessing a weapon on school property.
The name of the student has not been released.
