A man was arrested Monday afternoon after deputies say he drove 100 mph through a Collier County school zone while children were on a bus nearby, then was found with marijuana and drug paraphernalia in his truck.
According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened just before 2:30 p.m. along State Road 29 near Farm Worker Way.
A deputy spotted a red pickup truck speeding and said the driver, Stephen Hamlet, 39, nearly crashed into a cement truck and later almost hit a school bus full of children while passing in a no-passing zone.
The report states that the driver also went through the grass to pass vehicles and continued speeding through an active school zone where the limit was 20 mph.
The driver, later identified as Hamlett, was pulled over and arrested on the spot.
During a search of the truck, deputies say they found bags labeled “Grass Roots” containing marijuana, a grinder, and a glass pipe that tested positive for cocaine residue.
Hamlett is facing charges of reckless driving and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Collier County jail and later released on bond.
