A vigil was held Tuesday night for a man who was shot and killed after entering an apartment at The Carlton of Fort Myers.
Friends and family gathered outside Juan Diego's family home on Madison Avenue in Fort Myers. Between 30 and 40 people attended, sharing memories and mourning.
The Fort Myers Police Department said 28-year-old Juan Diego was shot and killed after briefly entering someone else's apartment, Thursday night.
Juan's brother, Miguel Diego, told Gulf Coast News his brother lived in building five, and Juan accidentally went to building 4 — and tried to enter an apartment with the same number as his own.
All the apartments and buildings at the Carlton of Fort Myers look nearly identical to each other, and each building has the same unit numbers.
Police said Juan was armed at the time and was banging on the door before managing to briefly enter the apartment. An occupant inside, feeling threatened, shot and killed Diego.
Fort Myers police are investigating the incident as a potential "Stand your ground" self-defense case. No arrests have been made at this time.
