Did you know there are more than 7,000 known species of lizards in the world? At the IMAG History & Science Center, there is Tina!
Tina is a giant Argentine black-and-white tegu, the largest of the tegu lizards.
The team at IMAG History & Science Center in Fort Myers joined Gulf Coast News to introduce us to Tina and showcase what makes her so unique.
Tegus inhabit tropical rain forests, semideserts and savannas in central and eastern South America. While they are quite intelligent and usually nonaggressive, their large size and powerful bodies make them more difficult to handle than smaller lizards. Argentine tegus are not native to Florida and, as such, they are considered an invasive species due to their impact on native wildlife. Tina and other tegus are omnivorous, consuming a wide range of foods including insects, fruits, and other scrumptious and yummy wildlife treats.
