At least six people have been hospitalized, and a suspect is now in custody after a shooting on the Florida State University Campus near the student union Thursday afternoon.
A senior administration official at FSU confirmed that multiple people were injured on campus during the incident.
Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare said in a statement that they are "receiving and caring for patients" from the reported shooting at the university.
President Donald Trump opened his Oval Office meeting with the Italian prime minister with comments on the shooting at Florida State University.
Trump said he had been “fully briefed,” adding, “It’s a horrible thing. It’s horrible that things like this take place.”
University events, including athletic events, scheduled for Thursday have been canceled. Classes are canceled through Friday. FSU also advises that anybody not already on the main campus should avoid the area.
At 12 p.m., an initial message was sent by the university via an emergency alert system. A follow-up message from the university at 12:19 p.m. stated:
"This is an Emergency Message for Florida State University, Tallahassee Campus. Continue to shelter in place. Police have responded to an active shooter call at the Student Union. Stay alert for more information."
The Tallahassee Memorial Hospital's statement in full reads:
"TMH is actively receiving and caring for patients related to an incident that has occurred at Florida State University. At this time, details are still unfolding, and we do not yet have specific information to share. However, we want to assure the community that our teams are fully mobilized and prepared to provide the highest level of care and support to all those affected.
We remain in close coordination with emergency responders and public safety officials. Out of respect for patient privacy and to ensure accurate information, we will provide updates as soon as they are available.
We ask for your patience and compassion during this difficult time."
