Residents in Iona communities like Coconut Creek and Veridian are speaking out against a plan to turn the former Century 21 Mobile Home Park into a luxury RV resort.
The proposed Sanibel Siesta RV Resort would feature 390 RV spaces, a pool, a clubhouse and pickleball courts.
On Thursday, the Lee County Hearing Examiner held a meeting for the proposed plans. Neighbors said they worry the development will bring more traffic, lower property values, and change the character of the area.
“This is a quiet neighborhood,” said resident Martha Lowe. “An RV park will decrease home values.”
“It’s already a traffic nightmare,” added Dale Givens, president of the Coconut Creek Homeowners Association. “Large rigs coming in every few days will only make it worse.”
The property was damaged by Hurricane Ian and a tornado in 2022. The owners — five local families since 1973 — say they're reinvesting to rebuild instead of selling.
“We want to create something we’re proud of,” said owner Joel Christensen.
The property owners have two weeks to revise plans to address neighbors and the hearing examiner's concerns by May 2. After that, the Lee County Hearing Examiner will review the plans and decide whether to recommend rezoning the site.
