A confused driver was caught going the wrong way just after midnight on Wednesday, along Cape Coral Parkway and SE 15th Avenue.
Just a few days later, Anthony Gibson still can't believe he saw the driver going the wrong way. He was driving to his home after work.
"I'm in the middle lane, and this guy turns right in front of the Iguana Mia and starts heading down towards me. The funniest part is that he's beeping at me like I'm on the wrong side of the road," Gibson told Gulf Coast News.
Gibson immediately stopped his car right in the middle because he didn't know what that driver was going to do.
"The scary part was, there was another truck in the lane that he was in heading towards the truck, and the truck had to actually go out two lanes to be able to let this car pass," he said.
Gulf Coast News showed the video to Jay Anderson, the executive director of Stay Alive Just Drive, he says what Gibson did was the best thing to do for safety.
"That was smart too on their part, you know, you're going to minimize it right there because then you can potentially react, worst-case scenario, drive up on the sidewalk," Anderson said.
It's unclear what caused the driver to drive the wrong way, but Gibson knows that what that driver did is dangerous and illegal.
"I don't know if it's a matter of intoxication or if it's a matter of not having enough signs up, like wrong way, I mean, I think they're everywhere, but apparently it's a little deceiving if it's happening pretty often," Gibson said.
Gulf Coast News reached out to the Cape Coral police to see if they received any calls on this, they said no. The department sent us this statement regarding wrong-way drivers:
"There are nearly a quarter of a million people who live in Cape Coral. Of course, not all of them are driving, but a significant portion of the population is. Add in the thousands of people who commute within our city each day, and you have hundreds of thousands of people on our roadways in any given day. In the rare occurrence that a driver spots someone going the wrong way, such as the one video clip you sent us, they should pull over to a safe location and call the police immediately."
