A town hall meeting hosted by Congressman Byron Donalds turned chaotic Monday night as heated exchanges between attendees erupted into shouting matches, prompting deputies to escort several people from the auditorium at Estero High School.
Hundreds of Southwest Florida residents filled the venue. Residents were eager to hear from the Republican congressman, many with sharp questions and even sharper criticisms. While some audience members cheered, others jeered, with applause and boos trading off throughout the evening.
Donalds fielded questions on a broad array of national topics. These included controversial issues such as gun rights, diversity and inclusion policies, tariffs, Social Security, and even Elon Musk’s involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency.
By the end of the night, nearly half the crowd had walked out, many leaving before the event had concluded. Despite the disruptions, Donalds appeared unfazed.
“I don’t get surprised by much anymore,” he said. “You just kind of deal with it as it comes. I could tell from the first question or two what kind of night it was going to be.”
Donalds said he will hold more town hall meetings in person.
"It's important, especially at this time period, where there's a lot of confusion and a lot of misconceptions. Obviously, there are citizens who are not happy, but there are many more citizens who are. And so I think it's important to go out there and bring this information to people, whether they want to hear it or not," Donalds said.
One unexpected element was the large number of Democrats who turned out for the event.
When asked directly why he believes he should be Florida’s next governor and how he plans to serve Floridians, Donalds was unable to respond because his media team quickly intervened.
