A Cape Coral man was arrested Monday afternoon in Fort Myers after police say he led police on a high-speed chase and was found with a synthetic drug and a handgun.
According to the Fort Myers Police Department arrest report, officers attempted a traffic stop at 4:23 p.m. on April 14, near Fowler Street and Hanson Street.
They say the driver, later identified as Ju’Ray Reymund Smith, 25, refused to stop and sped off through city streets, ignoring traffic signals and emergency lights.
The pursuit ended when the vehicle stopped near Delaware Avenue, where officers detained Smith at gunpoint.
During a search, police say they found a vape pen with synthetic cannabinoids in Smith’s pants pocket, as well as other vape products.
Officers also found a 9mm handgun on the driver’s seat of the car with a serial number that came up with no matches in the database. Police confirmed that Smith is not a convicted felon.
Smith was arrested and faces charges of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement—both third-degree felonies.
Police said the car, a 2008 BMW, was towed from the scene and the evidence, including the drugs and firearm, was submitted for processing.
Smith is scheduled to appear in court in May.
