All counties in Southwest Florida are now under a burn ban after DeSoto County issued mandatory restrictions Tuesday in response to extreme drought conditions.
According to DeSoto County officials, the burn ban, which prohibits open burning not permitted by the Florida Forest Service, was enacted through a county resolution.
The ban, intended to protect lives and property, forbids outdoor burning such as bonfires, campfires and yard debris fires.
The ordinance does not apply to above-ground charcoal, gas or electric grills, which are still allowed.
Officials urge residents to extinguish charcoal completely after cooking and advise against outdoor grilling near wooded areas. Barrel-style barbecue smokers are also allowed.
The restrictions, part of DeSoto County’s “Emergency Drought Conditions Fire Hazard” Ordinance, were approved by the Board of County Commissioners under Resolution No. 2025-4.
