A man was arrested after Charlotte County deputies were told he had raped a 13-year-old boy.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office , the incident occurred on April 13.
Deputies were called to meet a family on April 20 who wanted to report the incident.
The victim's mother told deputies that her son told her what happened. According to the report, the victim said he was afraid and nervous to tell anyone immediately.
Her son later told investigators he was at his father's home playing hide-and-seek with his younger brother and a man, and hid in the woods in the backyard.
He stated that while he was hiding in the woods with the man, the man approached him and asked if he wanted to touch his (the man's) genitals.
The child said no, but the man, later identified as 20-year-old Samuel Cobos-Carmona, then asked if he could touch the child's buttocks. The child replied, "No," again.
According to the report, Cobos-Carmona grabbed the child and began holding him down as the child tried to scream and fight back.
The child told deputies that Cobos-Carmona left when he heard his younger brother coming.
Deputies spoke with the boy's father, who explained he had his children over visiting and was working on setting up his furniture inside the apartment at the time of the incident. He said neither child told him about what happened after the incident.
According to the report, deputies discovered Cobos-Carmona was mowing lawns in the area of Pennell Street and Poplar Avenue in Englewood.
Cobos-Carmona reportedly told deputies that he was playing hide-and-seek with the victim and denied all sexual contact with them. When deputies asked him why he thought the boy would make up a story like that, he said he did not know.
Following the interview with CCSO, Cobos-Carmona was arrested on April 21 for lewd or lascivious battery by engaging in sexual activity with a person 12 years of age or older but less than 16 years of age.
He was taken to the Charlotte County Jail. Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell said Cobos Carmona admitted to committing the crime while being arrested by deputies.
Prummell said Cobos-Carmona came to the U.S. from Mexico in August 2021 before he was deported. According to the sheriff, Cobos-Carmona illegally entered the country again sometime in early 2022 after fleeing from Texas authorities, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
The sheriff said he was located in Sarasota in July 2024, but was released.
