Southwest Florida's hot and dry temperatures make the danger of fires high across the region. NASA's FireSense project studies fires, how they spread, and technology that can be used against them.
The project concentrates on four use cases to support decisions to be made before, during, and after wildfires.
It monitors fires using technology deployed inside airplanes. The technology maps fire details like temperature hotspots and fuels. Plus, it is able to transport real-time data to the ground.
Currently, the project is at risk because of budget cuts.
