A new set of concrete medians on San Carlos Boulevard is stirring up strong opinions from drivers, some calling it a much-needed safety move, others describing it as a confusing obstacle course.
The Florida Department of Transportation installed the medians between Kelly Road and Summerlin Boulevard to slow down speeding drivers. But locals say navigating them isn’t always smooth sailing.
"It’s like crawling through a maze," said Terry Tyson, a Lee County resident who’s driven the road for years. "All of a sudden, you come across, and it's like, 'Oh, I’ve got to get into the other lane.'"
Driving the stretch, Gulf Coast News counted four medians that force drivers to curve off a straight path, adding new twists and turns to an already winding road.
"It’s not that subtle of a bump," said Tim Tyson. "It looks like it could be dangerous … and harmful to your car."
Still, others say the medians are a step in the right direction.
"Way too many people speed through here," said Jay Jay, another local driver. "This should help slow things down. You’ve got pedestrians, bikers, it’s about time."
