A grassroots organization, Lee County Disaster Survivors Association, is holding a public meeting on Wednesday to help residents build back from storm disasters, such as hurricanes Ian, Helene, and Milton.
This organization is made up of people who have experienced disaster devastation themselves. They want to help you advocate for a full and fair recovery.
Tara Boyd with the Lee County Disaster Survivors Association says she lost her home during Ian and sat in the water for eight and a half hours with her husband to stay alive.
"Once the surge kind of switched, or, you know, the storm switched directions, sucked the water back out, we were able to sleep in a car that night. We walked home the next day to find that our home had been, like, destroyed," said Boyd.
Boyd and other people affected by devastation have come together and lobbied on Capitol Hill, fighting for the CDBG money.
Boyd says there is still $143 million from the CDBG fund left from Hurricane Ian and $100 million from Helene and Milton.
"We are going to make sure that our neighbors in our community know about the CDBG money," Boyd stated.
They will go over insurance issues, give updates on the rebuilding progress after Hurricane Ian, talk about how federal aid is being used and share the resources available to you at the meeting Wednesday evening.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 30, at 6 p.m. at the Pine Ridge Community Center, located along Pine Ridge Road in Lee County.
