Cape Coral police surrounded a home on Kismet Parkway near Third Avenue on Friday evening, detaining several people for hours in connection with a stolen excavator reported by an off-duty Lee County deputy.
Logan Curdy, a witness, said, "It beats me. I don't even know where to start."
Curdy described the unusual scene outside his home.
"I saw probably 4 or 5 police cars. I saw the sirens out the window, so I went out to take a look," he said.
Police said the investigation was prompted by the report of the stolen excavator, and three men are accused of stealing the machine.
"I see four people, like, lined up against the garage with their hands above their heads like that. So I didn't know what was going on," Curdy said.
Officers searched behind the house, where the stolen excavator was found.
Curdy expressed his disappointment, saying, "It's really a shame that this sort of behavior would be happening in this neck of the woods."
Cape Coral police confirmed that the excavator was returned to its owner. Although no arrests were made, they are still investigating what happened.
