A natural gas leak prompted the evacuation of a day care and closed Evans Avenue for hours Thursday afternoon in Fort Myers.
According to the Fort Myers Fire Department, a third-party drilling crew struck a TECO gas line along Winkler Avenue, near Swamp Cabbage Road and Colonial Boulevard.
As a safety precaution, 70 students were evacuated from Odyssey Daycare. A nearby law firm was also evacuated.
Evans Ave. was blocked off from Colonial Blvd. to Winkler Ave. for five hours but has since reopened.
TECO was on the scene addressing the leak and pinched the line.
Fort Myers Police and Fire departments responded to the scene where at the scene those in the area could smell a strong natural gas odor in the air.
