If you’ve driven over the Sanibel Causeway in the last three years, you’ve seen construction crews working hard to restore the causeway islands. Hurricane Ian ripped it apart.
After a long wait, the causeway beaches finally reopened on May 1, so get your sunscreen ready.
This is phase one of the opening, which means opening up all the causeway beaches to the public! Plus, you’ll be able to pull off the causeway and park for free. There are about 800 parking spaces between the three islands.
There will be dedicated parking spots instead of open parking, as it was before. The Fourth of July Fireworks are coming back, too.
The project aims to create a stronger, more resilient causeway to prevent another collapse.
Lee County leaders estimate that the design phase for additional amenities, such as bathrooms, will be completed within about a year.
