Cape Coral residents who live in the area highlighted in red below, between Pine Island Road and Gator Slough Canal, who get their water from the Mid-Hawthorn Aquifer via wells, are no longer permitted to use lawn irrigation systems.
The restriction is one of several announced this week by South Florida Water Management District. The rules being implemented are in an attempt to prevent underground water levels from dropping to a point where SFWMD says "irreversible harm" could occur to the aquifer.
According to a news release from the district, there is an exception for drip irrigation and hand watering using self-cancelling nozzles. The exception applies on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
All of Cape Coral is in a severe drought as identified by the U.S. Drought Monitor .
