The Florida Department of Transportation is taking steps to improve safety on State Road 82.
"They need to fix that road. I personally think they need to put a light, but who knows what's going to go on with that road?" said Lee County driver Dagoberto Miranda.
If you drive on state Road 82, you will most likely face bumper-to-bumper traffic, reckless speeding and crashes. Drivers like Dagoberto Miranda try to avoid it after having crashed on State Road 82 before.
"That road right there, there has been multiple accidents and deaths. It's kind of sad because, like I said, you could be the safest driver, but a half the time it's not even going to be your fault, you know?" said Miranda.
Drivers coming out of seven side streets onto State Road 82 will now turn right and make U-turns.
Crews are already at work putting up signs at these locations between Sunshine and Columbus boulevards. Poles have also been placed to prevent drivers from making left-hand turns. FDOT decided to change the traffic pattern to prevent people from crashing as they cross the highway.
Drivers like Miranda hope it is a turn in the right direction.
"Hopefully they fix it because I personally know some of the people that passed away right there. ... Each time I come see, there's always a new memorial cross, you know, and it's kind of sad," said Miranda.
The right-only turns should be ready at these seven intersections by the end of this week.
