A Bonita Springs man convicted of orchestrating his wife's 2015 murder is scheduled to appear in court Monday to challenge his death sentence.
Mark Sievers was found guilty of hiring two others to kill his wife, Dr.Teresa Sievers, in Bonita Springs nearly a decade ago in order to collect $4.43 million in life insurance benefits. He is expected in court at 1:30 p.m. on Monday.
The case drew national attention due to its brutal nature and the involvement of close personal acquaintances in the murder plot.
Sievers was sentenced to death in 2020 after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
His co-conspirators, Curtis Wayne Wright and Jimmy "The Hammer" Rodgers, received separate sentences: Wright was sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty and agreeing to testify against the others, while Rodgers received a life sentence.
In his latest appeal, Sievers is seeking to have his death sentence vacated , arguing that new evidence and legal considerations warrant a re-examination of his case.
His defense team has filed motions requesting access to sealed records from the Medical Examiner's Office, which they believe could provide crucial information pertinent to their appeal.
The hearing is set to take place at the Lee County Justice Center, where the judge will consider the motions presented by the defense.
