The Fort Myers Beach Town Council met on Monday and approved a contract with William McKannay, as he will become the new Town Manager of Fort Myers Beach.
McKannay will replace the outgoing town manager, Andrew Hyatt, who announced his resignation back in January.
“I am looking forward to helping with the rebuild and bringing the community back,” McKannay said in a news advisory. “My wife, Deidre, and I are excited to join the community and get involved!”
According to the town, McKannay has over 30 years of management and leadership experience. His most recent experience is as an emergency management consultant with Applied Training Solutions.
McKannay has a lot of experience from serving in the U.S. Army, where he retired as a Colonel. Some of McKannay's most recent service includes as a Garrison Commander (City Manager) of Fort Riley, Kansas, then as Protection and Mission Assurance Chief (Director of Security and Emergency Management) at U.S. Northern Command in Colorado Springs, Colorado, according to the town.
In addition, McKannay has quite the educational background: a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice with a minor in political science from Northern Arizona University, a Master of Strategic Studies from the Army War College, and a Master of Public Policy Management from Georgetown University.
May 19 is scheduled to be McKannay's first day as the Town Manager of Fort Myers Beach.
