Lee County commissioners on Tuesday approved an agreement to accept about $2 million in federal funding for a new sidewalk project along Bell Boulevard in Lehigh Acres.
According to the Lee County Board of County Commissioners, the agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation will help fund construction and inspection services for a new sidewalk that stretches from Sunrise Boulevard to Albemarle Circle.
The concrete sidewalk will run along the east side of Bell Boulevard from Sunrise Boulevard to Shadow Lakes Drive, cross the road at a flashing beacon, then continue along the west side to Albemarle Circle.
Plans for the project also include a steel pedestrian bridge over Jim’s Canal. The sidewalk will link with existing walkways at both the north and south ends of the corridor.
Design for the project is already complete. The construction phase will go out to bid before returning to commissioners for final approval.
County officials said the sidewalk was identified as a top priority by the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.
