Charlotte County leaders are unveiling a new fire station and sheriff's office today in Babcock Ranch to accommodate the area's booming development.
The facilities, Fire Station 9 and the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office District 5, are located on Curry Preserve Drive.
The nearest existing fire station to Babcock Ranch is more than two miles away, while the closest sheriff's office is in Punta Gorda, about 28 miles from the new location.
These new facilities will serve more than 5,000 residents in the area.
Fire Station 9 will house a ladder truck, advanced decontamination systems, and the newest in emergency communications technology. Both buildings are 12,500 square feet and built to withstand severe weather such as hurricanes.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for these new facilities is scheduled for 10 a.m. and is open to the public.
