Cape Coral city leaders will be deciding on Wednesday the next steps for the old 175-acre golf course, which the city purchased last summer.
The old Cape Coral Golf Course, formerly known as "the golf club," has sat empty for 10 years.
It's located along Palm Tree Boulevard, surrounded by several homes, but it has become overgrown and is surrounded by a fence, closed off to the public.
"They took down a lot of trees, and it used to be really nice to walk for people to take a walk and stuff," said Tara Boccia, a Cape Coral resident. "They took out more trees like this week, and there's not a lot of shade."
Cape Coral city leaders are looking to approve more money today to get the master plan for this development up and going.
Last summer, the city talked about creating an oasis with outdoor cafes, restaurants and parks. The contractor for this project said their plans would be developed into a community park.
Whatever the golf course becomes, Boccia hopes to see the nature stay.
"We've been walking here for years and it's just quiet, but all the trees down, and the wildlife; there's so many wildlife that have nowhere to go," she said.
In October, the council approved a contract to provide the city with a parks master plan update, a month after buying the land. Now they are looking to add another $74,145 to the project. The plan would increase the total project amount to more than $292,755.
"I think they're doing that because maybe the money, like money talks, I guess," she said.
The consultant said the master plan could take around four months to complete.
This will be decided at tonight’s City Council meeting. It starts at 5 p.m. in the Council Chamber.
