A brand-new home is scorched and charred after an SUV slammed into it, bursting into flames in Northwest Cape Coral.
"It hit the front of the house!" a neighbor shouts in exclusive video as flames climb just as high as the house.
The crash happened just after midnight Tuesday on NW 42nd Lane. The house is still under construction and caught fire immediately.
"At first I saw the lights, the fire trucks," said Terri Weiler, who can see the home from her backyard. "Then I called my daughter, who lives down the road, to make sure they were okay. She said, 'It's the house behind you that's burning!'"
By morning, the home's front siding was blackened, and the homebuilder, Lennar Homes, boarded up the shattered window; car parts were scattered throughout the lawn.
Cape Coral police say the SUV blew through the stop sign, crossed the swale, traversed the front yard drain field, and crashed into the front of the house, igniting the fire. Neighbors told Gulf Coast News the driver lives in the area and likely suffered a medical episode before losing control.
Cape Coral firefighters were able to get to the house fast and quickly put out the massive fireball before it could spread.
"If somebody was living in the home, it could have been a lot worse," said another neighbor, Doug Campbell.
The driver walked away with only minor injuries, and the Cape Police Department is still investigating the crash. And while the house isn't for sale yet, it already has quite a story to tell.
