Get ready to support our older generations. May is Older Americans Month, a time to celebrate and honor the impact of older adults. At Community Cooperative, they have a program that provides adults with connection and food.
Dave Johnson, the Meals on Wheels manager, joined Gulf Coast News to explain how the program is helping serve older adults along the Gulf Coast.
The 2025 theme of Older Americans Month is "Flip the Script on Aging." It encourages everyone to challenge outdated stereotypes and celebrate the vibrancy, value, and resilience of older adults. At Community Cooperative, they believe aging is not a decline—it's an opportunity for continued purpose, connection, and contribution.
Meals on Wheels serves over 400 homebound individuals daily, many of whom are seniors throughout SWFL. Meals are delivered by dedicated volunteers who also provide daily wellness checks. It provides not just food, but a lifeline to vulnerable neighbors.
Many of the Mobile Food Pantry's guests are older adults facing barriers to transportation. A food desert is typically a low-income area with limited or no nearby grocery stores, making it difficult for residents—especially seniors without transportation—to find fresh, nutritious food. Mobile Food Pantries bring the market to them, reducing hunger and providing dignity through choice.
Volunteers usually arrive mid-morning to pick up pre-packed meals and head out on their delivery route. The routes are designed to take about an hour, and at each stop, volunteers greet the client, drop off a meal, and often chat briefly.
For more information or to volunteer, head to Community Cooperative online. There’s a short volunteer form to fill out, and the team will help you get started. You can also donate right on the website.
