People who live along Fifth Street at West Cypress Avenue say they are constantly having to dodge cars because there are no sidewalks, no speed bumps, and a lack of lighting in the area.
They are calling for more safety measures throughout the neighborhood after a driver hit a man and a 3-year-old Wednesday night.
"People go too fast, and they don't watch. They just zoom right through. But I actually think speed bumps would be a way to solve some of that problem," said Virgina Mueller, a neighbor.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver hit them at 7:35 p.m. The mother-in-law of the man who was hit tells Gulf Coast News that he and the 3-year-old were walking home from the neighborhood park when they were hit. She says her son-in-law is recovering from a brain bleed, but is doing fine, as he was finally able to speak Thursday, and the three-year-old is also doing fine.
"You should be able to go to a playground with your kids and know that you're going to be safe on the playground and safe going home. But, unfortunately, with all the crazy drivers and all the crazy things that happen daily, you know, you're going to have that worry," said Tasianna Squires, Fort Myers Shores.
"I don't understand why it's taking this long for anybody to come out and say, hey, well, what is your opinion about no sidewalks? I'm more than 25 years in this house. And y'all are the first people that I've seen in this neighborhood talking about something that's been going on since I've been here without change. That's the biggest problem," said Charles Williams, who lives in the Fort Myers Shores neighborhood.
Gulf Coast News has reached out to Lee County DOT to see if any plans are in the works to bring safety measures to the neighborhood, but we have not heard back yet.
