The Cape Coral Police Department is warning residents about a common scam from imposters claiming to be from legitimate organizations.
According to CCPD, they have received many complaints from people saying they fell victim to this scam.
The scammer will contact the victim via phone call, email, or text. They will claim to be a police officer, a federal agent, or someone working for the IRS or a bank. They will then try to create a sense of urgency by saying things like "You need to do this now or you will be arrested."
Cape Coral police say that a legitimate institution would never do this.
This type of scam is being reported nationwide.
The scammers may also try to send you a link. Police warn to never open it.
CCPD says you should never take large sums of money out of your bank account at the request of someone over the phone, through text, or through email.
