A possible attempted child abduction in Cape Coral might have been a misunderstanding, police say.
On May 7, 10-year-old Matthew Sprouse reported that he was sitting on a bench at his bus stop at Northeast 41st Street and Andalusia Boulevard when a black SUV with two men inside pulled up next to him.
He told the Cape Coral Police Department that the passenger opened the door and lunged at him before he got back on his bike and went home.
After an investigation and conversations with Sprouse and his family, police discovered the statements might not have "accurately reflected all of the facts of the incident."
According to the CCPD, additional information clarified the circumstances. Police said they believe an incident did occur, but not an attempted abduction.
The CCPD said its conversations with the child's family led police to believe the child might have ridden his bike in the path of a vehicle, and the driver might have confronted him about it.
According to police, the child's mother came forward with the information she was given.
