In 2025 alone, approximately 93,000 people will be diagnosed with a brain tumor. Brain tumors can form in any part of the brain and can be dangerous. That is why May is Brain Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of brain tumors.
Sara Crosby, founder of Keira's Kougars Care Inc., joined Gulf Coast News to shine a light on her nonprofit that is helping support families affected by brain cancer.
Keira battled brain tumors twice in her short life. During those battles, she was positive and unbelievably strong. Her mom, Crosby, experienced firsthand the financial burden that comes with an already unfathomable life experience. As medical bills added up, she had to push forward. Keira's Kougars Care was born out of Crosby's mission to #livelikekeira. Whether it's by covering a scan, a surgery, therapies, etc., the nonprofit helps to alleviate the financial burden faced by families affected by brain cancer.
There are more than 100 distinct types of primary brain tumors, each with its own spectrum of presentations, treatments and outcomes. Brain tumors are dangerous because they can put pressure on healthy parts of the brain or spread into those areas. Some brain tumors can cause problems if they block the flow of fluid around the brain, which can lead to an increase in pressure inside the skull.
