A dangerous sight was caught on camera in Lehigh Acres: a man holding onto a refrigerator in the back of a pickup truck with the tailgate wide open.
It happened May 1 at the busy intersection of Lee Boulevard and Gunnery Road North. The driver who sent Gulf Coast News said it happened around 9 a.m. that day. He quickly took a video to capture the moment, and didn't have that much time to look because the light turned green.
The man holding the fridge was breaking several Florida State Statutes.
The top thing several drivers mentioned after seeing the video was the concern of safety.
"It's kind of dangerous, and that's a big hazard for everyone, for them and for the one who's driving on the back," said Pedro Shan.
The video was two to three seconds long, but that's more than enough time for defensive driving instructors like Jay Anderson to say that what that man was doing was illegal.
"There is a Florida Statute 316.520 that requires us to secure our road. I don't think somebody's standing in the back of the truck, holding your refrigerator, qualifies as securing your load," Anderson said.
Florida Highway Patrol told Gulf Coast News that if you're 18 years old, you are allowed to be in the back of a truck, but you need to be sitting down and not standing up.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office said they didn't receive any calls about this incident. If you ever see any dangerous situation, call 911.
