Summer is almost here, and that means it's almost time to fire up that grill and enjoy some delicious food. But what if your favorite cookout classics could also give your body a nutritional boost?
Local dietitian Gisela Bouvier, in partnership with Florida Milk and the Florida Beef Council, joined Gulf Coast News to share some delicious recipes with a healthier twist that you can add to your cookout menu.
Everyone loves to start their cookouts with some appetizers. Bouvier recommends Greek Yogurt Dip with Veggies. Adding a dip always encourages intake of fiber-rich foods like whole grains, fruits, and veggies. Another good option would be Steak Crostinis with Horseradish Whip. This is a savory appetizer made with strip loin, which is one of 36 lean cuts of beef. Beef also provides high-quality protein, B vitamins, and iron.
During Memorial Day weekend, many people like to enjoy burgers and cookouts. But there are other delicious options for you and the whole family. Bouvier suggests Beef Kabobs made with Top Sirloin, which is another one of the 36 lean cuts and that the kabobs include fiber-rich veggies. Another option to try is the Grilled Steak Flatbread as an upgraded pizza that is deliciously grilled.
And you can't forget about desserts. Bouvier suggests Blood Orange Popsicles, a refreshing popsicle for summer. But these popsicles are also made with vanilla Greek yogurt. Or try the more indulgent Vanilla Pudding Dip and pair it with fruit. That will help encourage both kids and adults to get their fiber and micronutrients in.
