Alexandria Amuanegui takes so many muddy trips into the Cypress Dome, she's lost count.
For the past two years, she's guided students through the dome, diving into learn about our Gulf Coast ecosystem.
"Even on some of our wet walks, students will want to bring snorkeling gear," Alexandria said. "It's very refreshing. It's actually very clean water, believe it or not."
But these tours aren't all that Alexandria did during her time on campus.
She volunteered for pollution management. She researched water management. She was nominated as the Vice President of the American Water Research Chapter. She's even in the class of 2025 Hall of Fame.
All of those environmental endeavors she's passionately pursued have earned her a nickname given by her peers that she'll never forget.
"I'm kind of known as the swamp girl around here," said Alexandria. "I love seeing people's reactions to seeing different things on the trees or seeing things in bloom, and getting to smell different things. It's such a good feeling it really is."
While Alexandria is now moving on to study environmental law, this space is her safe place.
"I just feel like the earth gave so much to me at a time when I had so little to give to anyone, and everything inside of me just feels like I need to give back to the planet," said Alexandria. "I'll continue to fight to protect these spaces."
