Jamie Haberman said the unimaginable happened Monday when she discovered her daughter Mikayah had been hit by a Jeep on her e-scooter.
“My daughter was laying in the road, almost in the intersection with blood pouring from her face and her leg was obviously broken,” Haberman said.
Lee County deputies responded to the scene around 7:30 p.m. Monday night.
Mikayah was taken to the hospital with two broken bones in her leg and an injured eye.
“She's now got a permanent rod going down her tibia, which is like your shinbone,” Haberman said. “She also broke the fibula, which is the other lower leg bone on the side.”
State data shows there have been at least 133 bicycle crashes in Lee County this year.
A total of 125 bicyclists had injuries and one person died.
Haberman said she worries other kids could face the same fate if nothing is done.
“I would love to see them put a stop sign here to help stop some of that speeding. Even stop signs down further would be great,” Haberman said.
She said she is just glad her daughter will recover.
