After many Cape Coral residents were confused about the school zone cameras, the police offered some clarification on how to avoid getting a ticket.
Drivers are saying they got fines outside of the school zone hours. Drivers going 10 miles per hour over the speed limit get a $100 fine.
School zone cameras will flash during school zone hours, but some say they have gotten tickets even when the lights are not flashing or beyond the time the cameras are supposed to be working.
Cape Coral Police say the cameras work 30 minutes before and after school and the entire day in between. Drivers cannot go 11 miles over the speed limit when the lights are flashing. If the lights are not flashing, but it is still during school hours, the rule still applies.
However, one Cape Coral driver sent us his speeding ticket that he got on May 1 near Oasis Charter Elementary school. He got the ticket at 4:03 p.m. despite the fact that school ends at 4 p.m. He says that luckily he was able to get his ticket dismissed.
Police say that it discovered incorrect scheduling was given to one particular school zone and all citations for this location are being reviewed and dismissed. Although, they don't say which school zone.
If you get a ticket and spot an error, Cape Coral police say to call the police department and hit Option 3 or contact RedSpeed, the company that sold the cameras to the city.
