A hit-and-run crash involving a commercial 18-wheel semitruck caused an estimated $400,000 in damages, leaving behind a trail of mayhem with a half-dozen downed utility poles, damaged cars and fences in Cape Coral on Sunday.
After an early investigation, the Cape Coral Police Department believes that a semitruck hit a utility line, but the driver continued westbound on Tropicana Parkway with the lines dragging behind. The driver is accused of fleeing the scene.
Officers responded to crash reports at the intersection of Tropicana Pkwy. and NE 5th Ave. Witnesses reported hearing a loud collision followed by a power outage.
There was significant damage that included six downed power poles and lines, multiple parked vehicles dragged across yards and damaged fences, according to CCPD. Due to the damage, a traffic homicide investigator and property crimes detectives responded to the scene.
At this time, police have not reported or confirmed injuries in the crash.
CCPD stated that the suspected vehicle is described as an 18-wheeler semitruck with a yellow cab and white refrigerated trailer. A portion of the trailer's roof was torn and recovered on Tropicana Pkwy. Officials say the vehicle was last seen heading northbound on Burnt Store Road.
