A convicted felon was arrested early Saturday in a wooded residential area after deputies responded to reports of gunfire and later found multiple firearms and drugs in his home.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived at a home on Hibiscus Drive around 2 a.m. and heard about nine gunshots.
They said they saw a man, later identified as Curtis L. Robbins, 59, carrying a flashlight and yelling incoherently.
Deputies attempted to speak with Robbins, who is a convicted felon from Michigan and had not registered as such in Charlotte County.
Robbins told deputies, “Shoot me,” and refused to leave his property, instead lying down in a lawn chair. When he later went into a building and stayed there for more than 30 minutes, the sheriff’s office called in additional units, including SWAT, aviation support, K-9 teams, major crimes investigators, and crisis negotiators.
Robbins eventually came out and was taken into custody without further incident, CCSO said.
Deputies said they found multiple firearms, spent shell casings, ammunition, and a container with several rocks of suspected methamphetamine in the home. The container also had Robbins’ Florida ID inside.
Sheriff Bill Prummell commended deputies for their patience, stating, “We have seen too often how dangerous the combination of drugs and guns can be.”
Robbins was taken to the Charlotte County Jail and is facing charges including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, failing to register as a felon, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He is being held on $32,500 bond.
