Cape Coral residents living near the old golf course may have noticed work being done at the site.
City crews have been removing invasive trees at the long-abandoned Cape Coral Golf Course.
Ron and Florene Welebny live behind the course and said they worry about the wildlife in the vegetation.
“It's a loss of nature,” Florene said. “It was just so beautiful to see, and we're losing it all over the Cape.”
We told you the City of Cape Coral purchased the land last year.
A spokesperson with the city told me invasive trees are removed periodically to keep spaces healthy.
She said the trees are being removed in preparation for a future public park.
“There was no warning, nothing in the mailbox,” Florene said. “I woke up to a bulldozer knocking stuff down a lot and ripping up my lawn.”
While they worry about the wildlife and wish they would’ve been alerted, the Welebnys said the area was neglected and needs work.
“We don't mind the overgrowth because it's quiet,” Ron said. “In truth, it's got to go.”
