The state wildlife agency is urging boaters to prioritize safety this Memorial Day weekend, as increased activity on Florida’s waterways has raised concerns for accidents and fatalities.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, officers will be patrolling state waters to ensure compliance with safety laws, including wearing life jackets, avoiding alcohol, and maintaining safe speeds.
The commission emphasized that Memorial Day weekend is historically one of the busiest times for boating in Florida, with an increased risk of accidents.
“We’re out here trying to make sure everyone has a good time but stays safe,” said Maj. Rob Beaton, with the FWC. “Our officers will be focusing on safety checks and making sure people are wearing life jackets, not drinking and driving, and following all the rules.”
The agency advised boaters to ensure their vessels are equipped with necessary safety gear, check weather conditions before departing, and remain vigilant of other watercraft.
The FWC also noted that alcohol use is a leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents. They advised boaters to designate a sober operator and follow all applicable boating laws.
The agency’s officers will increase patrols throughout the holiday weekend, particularly in high-traffic areas, and emphasized that the goal is prevention, not punishment.
