A new development in Bonita Springs aims to bring apartment homes and commercial space, but residents have differing opinions on the changes.
Bonita Springs is set to transform land off U.S. Route 41 across from the Wonder Gardens with plans to build 120 apartment homes and 19,000 square feet of commercial space. Glen Beitmen, a member of the Bonita Downtown Alliance, expressed excitement about the new plans for Imperial 41, saying, "Beautiful restaurants will get more business, you know, and then people that come here. It's becoming a booming downtown."
Not everyone feels the same way. Bradford Wright, who lives down the street from the development, said, "The area is totally changed. It's turning into Miami. And, you know, they say it's progress. At whose expense?" Wright added that he might move to Central Florida for cleaner water and more lakes, as the area is not turning out as he hoped.
The plan includes two public parks with bike racks, a fire pit, and a kayak dock on the Imperial River. Crews are already working on the seawall. Beitmen also said, "I think it's good for the businesses as well. And also, you know, they'll be taxpayers too. So that helps overall all of Bonita."
The building construction is set to start in the fall of 2025, with the project expected to be finished by early 2027.
