A 77-year-old, double-leg amputee from Alva, Fla. recently got some help from a Gulf Coast nonprofit.
Lee BIA Builders Care and Trifecta Construction Solutions partnered to remodel Melvin Lawson’s bathroom and make it compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Lawson has lived in his home in Alva for more than 50 years. He’s a widower, and he lives independently.
Builders Care said, “During a home health visit, a local nursing student identified a pressing safety concern and referred Lawson to Builders Care. His prior bathroom setup posed a significant risk of falls and injury, lacking the accessibility features needed for someone with his mobility needs.”
After hearing his story, the nonprofit worked with Trifecta to upgrade Lawson’s bathroom and make for a safer situation.
“We are so grateful for all of our wonderful community partners and the work they did to help make this renovation possible,” said Audra McKinney, client services and projects manager at Lee BIA Builders Care. “Melvin is a devoted member of our community, volunteering at the Charleston Park Community Center’s food pantry to serve his neighbors in need. It was important to us that the community come together to support him in return, making his home a safer, more comfortable place to live.”
