Tropical Storm Alvin formed Thursday in the eastern Pacific with winds sustained at 40 mph. This is the first named storm of the season for the Pacific hurricane season and poses no threat to Florida. The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins June 1.
Alvin is moving slowly to the northwest at 10 mph. The storm is expected to strengthen over the next 24 hours over warm sea surface temperatures and low wind shear. The system is expected to weaken to a remnant low ahead of nearing the Baja California Peninsula toward the end of the weekend.
While the Pacific hurricane season has started, the Atlantic season is still quiet with no development expected over the next seven days.
