As the 2025 hurricane season kicks off, residents in southwest Florida are still cleaning up from last year’s storms — even as they brace for what’s ahead.
Damaged homes and boats still sit in Punta Gorda, reminders of back-to-back hurricanes like Milton, Helene and Ian. Despite the lingering impact, many are already preparing.
“You gotta expect it. It’s Florida. There’s a price to pay to live in paradise,” said Tina Combs of Port Charlotte.
Wyatt Weiler, who lives in Punta Gorda near the Peace River, said his neighborhood is still recovering.
“People didn’t have time to bounce back, and now they’re preparing early," Weiler said.
Preparation looks like shutters, cleared yards, tarps, flashlights and water.
“It’s better to be ready months in advance,” Weiler said.
Stephen Schaffner of North Port said, “Hurricane season comes around, and you're not exactly excited. But it's just part of living here.”
With past damage still visible and new storms possible, residents say they’re staying alert — and hopeful Mother Nature spares them this season.
