A startling dashcam video showing a car barreling the wrong way down a busy Collier County road has drivers on edge and safety officials urging vigilance behind the wheel.
The incident occurred early Monday morning near the intersection of Collier Boulevard and U.S. 41 — a heavily traveled route for residents heading toward Marco Island and Naples. In the video, a car can be seen driving directly into oncoming traffic in the left lane, narrowly avoiding collisions.
For Naples resident Donte Evans, it's just another reminder of the unpredictability on Florida’s roads.
"Wrong-way driver is probably, you see, a lot less than those other things,” Evans said, referencing more common traffic issues like tailgating and failing to use turn signals. “But I'm not surprised by something like that in Florida.”
Evans, who has seen his fair share of reckless behavior, believes not everyone is cut out for driving.
“I think driving is not for everybody,” he said.
Gulf Coast News showed multiple residents the dashcam video, all of them were left stunned.
“Floridians are crazy drivers, man. I’ll tell you what,” said Athana Gonzalez of Marco Island, who uses the intersection frequently. “Our actions have consequences. There’s ripple effects, and at the end of the day, someone can die because of it."
Gonzalez wants drivers to be held accountable on the roads.
"Keep your eyes on the road two car spaces ahead,” Evans said. "Watch out for the wrong-way drivers.”
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office told Gulf Coast News that they had no reports of the incident on Monday. They said wrong-way driving is illegal in Florida. It is also a serious offense that can have fatal consequences.
Once you are in a safe location, call 911. You will be asked to provide details such as the location of the wrong-way vehicle, the vehicle description and the direction of travel.
No injuries or crashes were reported in connection with the incident.
