Nine people were injured after a driver accused of being intoxicated lost control of a van and crashed into a tent in front of a taco stand at Marsh Avenue and Palm Beach Boulevard in Fort Myers Monday night.
Jose Cruz, who works at La Mexicana Taco, told Gulf Coast News what he witnessed.
“I mean, everybody's scared, you know, because for the family, there's kids, the little girls sitting over there. So, it's crazy for all that this happened,” Cruz said.
Cruz also says he believed one of the ladies who was struck had a broken leg.
Luis Alejandro Velasquez Herrera, 20, of Fort Myers, was arrested and faces 10 charges. According to the Fort Myers Police Department, he faces nine counts of DUI — damage to property or person of another and one count of DUI — influence of alcohol or drugs.
Hassan Roston was working at the time he saw the driver try to run away.
“I mean, the, the families that were in the way of that, that was my initial concern. You know, there's a large family and they're in my prayers. There's small children, yeah," Roston said. "It was just tough. It was a tough scene. And to see, you know, a vehicle run through here and then a drunk driver try to run away.”
FMPD said nine people were hospitalized, including multiple minors and the driver of the van, following the crash at La Mexicana Taco Stand. None of the injuries were life-threatening.
