One person has died after a two-vehicle crash on County Road 850 (Corkscrew Road) at Whidden Loop Road in Collier County on Thursday.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, a Ford sedan, driven by an 18-year-old Immokalee man, crossed the dotted center line to attempt to pass vehicles.
A driver in a dump truck attempted to avoid colliding with the vehicle by swerving left off the roadway. However, he could not avoid a collision.
The dump truck and sedan collided head-on. The sedan was redirected onto a nearby grassy shoulder and a barbed wire fence.
The passenger in the sedan, a 25-year-old Immokalee man, was transported to Gulf Coast Medical Center and pronounced dead, FHP said. The 18-year-old driver suffered serious injuries.
According to the report, the driver of the truck suffered minor injuries.
The road is now open on both sides. All lanes of Corkscrew Rd. at Whidden Loop Rd. had been closed since 6:50 a.m., according to the Collier County Sheriff's Office.
A tow truck and FHP were at the scene.
