Trees offer a wealth of benefits to our community. But in a hurricane, they can cause considerable damage when overwhelmed by a storm's wind.
Before the peak of hurricane season arrives, it's a good idea to look around your yard and assess the health and placement of the trees on your property and perform any necessary preventative maintenance.
Researchers at the University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, or UF/IFAS for short, compiled years of research on tree survival situations during hurricanes into a concise write-up focused on answering the question: "What makes a tree more wind resistant?"
You can read the entire write-up here .
In the report, you'll see the findings after researchers studied the impacts on trees from 10 storms, including Hurricanes Charley, Andrew and Jeanne.
